An email API sends a message and moves on. An inbox API provisions a mailbox your agent owns, with an address, a durable message store, automatic threading, and an identity people can reply to.
Send-first email APIs like Resend, Amazon SES, SendGrid, and Postmark are built for software notifying humans: transactional receipts, password resets, shipping updates. Inbound exists only as a webhook event you have to catch, store, and thread yourself. Inbox APIs treat the mailbox as the primitive. One call provisions an inbox with its own address, persistent storage, threading, webhooks, and an identity a customer or vendor can write back to. Receiving and replying are first-class, not an afterthought bolted on top of a sending pipe.
If your agent only pushes one-way notifications, a send-first API is enough. The moment the job includes a reply, a verification code coming back, or a conversation to hold, you need an inbox.
What is the difference between an email API and an inbox API?
An email API moves a message. You hand it a payload, it goes out, you're done. Inbound isn't part of the core model. If it exists at all, it arrives as a webhook event you're responsible for catching, storing, and connecting to whatever it was replying to.
An inbox API provisions a mailbox and hands it to your agent. From the moment you create it, that mailbox has an address, a durable message store, automatic threading, and an identity anyone can write back to. Sending is one of the things it does, not the only thing.

What is a send-first email API built for?
Transactional email APIs were designed for a real and important job: software notifying humans. Receipts, password resets, shipping updates, millions a day, tuned for throughput and deliverability. At that job they are excellent, and nothing here is a knock on them.
The shape that makes them good at it is also what makes them wrong for an agent. There's no durable mailbox behind the key, just a sending endpoint and a log of what went out. Inbound is a separate system bolted on: a reply hits a webhook, and if your code doesn't catch it and write it somewhere, it's gone. Nothing in the platform knows that this reply belongs to that conversation, or that this address is a stable identity someone might come back to next week. For one-way notifications, none of that is missing. For an agent holding a conversation, all of it is.
Where the send-first model falls apart for AI agents
An agent isn't firing a notification. It's doing a job, and the job almost always involves someone writing back: a vendor answering a quote, a service sending a verification code, a customer continuing a thread. Point an agent at a send-first API and every one of those return trips has nowhere to land.
You can close the gap, but look at what closing it costs. On a send-first API, catching a single reply and keeping the conversation straight is code you write and maintain forever:

On an inbox API, inbound is already received, stored, and threaded. Reading it back is a single call:

Each returned message carries its thread context, so replies land in the right conversation without you writing the reconciliation logic. The send-first version is the beginning of a mail system you now maintain. The inbox version is a method call.
What does an inbox API give an AI agent?
An inbox API makes the inbox the primitive. Creating one looks closer to provisioning a resource than to calling a send endpoint:

client_id is an idempotency key. Pass the same value again and you get the same inbox back instead of a duplicate, which matters when an agent restarts mid-task and re-runs its setup.
From that one call, the agent has an address it owns on a default or custom domain, a store where every message is kept and re-readable, threading that attaches replies to the conversation they belong to, and a stable identity a customer or vendor or another agent can write to at any time. Isolation between tenants comes from the layer around it (pods for resources, custom domains for sending reputation), not from anything you assemble by hand.
Why can't you bolt inbound onto a send API?
Receiving, threading, and addressing are state, and state changes the system beneath you. A send pipe is stateless on purpose. It accepts a message and forgets it. An inbox has a lifecycle: it's provisioned, it persists, it threads, it's isolated, and eventually it's retired. You don't cross from one to the other by flipping a retention setting or adding an endpoint, any more than a spreadsheet becomes a database because you gave it more rows. One is a function you call. The other is a system that has to remember.
When to use an email API vs an inbox API
Use a send-first email API when your agent only ever pushes one-way notifications and nobody ever writes back. That's the lighter dependency and it's the right choice.
Use an inbox API when the job includes replies, verification codes, or more than one agent that needs its own address and reputation. Reaching for a send pipe in those cases pushes storage, threading, and identity onto you, and the first reply with nowhere to land is where you find out.
