The first page of results for "AgentMail alternatives" is mostly vendor owned. Salesforge names Infraforge, SendGrid, Mailgun, Postmark and Amazon SES. eesel names eesel, Infraforge, AI Inbx, Shortwave, Smartlead, Superhuman and Mailforge. Each list opens with the company that publishes it.
The second list is the more useful illustration. Superhuman is a client a person reads mail in. Smartlead is a cold outreach sequencer. Amazon SES is a delivery service with no inbox object at all. Putting them in one ranking requires a shared axis, and neither page states one, so a reader comparing Superhuman to SES has nothing to compare on.

Resend
Of the five, Resend is the fastest to get sending from, and its developer experience is the usual reason teams land there. Inbound arrives through either a team default address at <alias>@<id>.resend.app or a custom domain, and Resend parses the message to JSON, stores attachments, and posts the payload to an endpoint you choose. There is no inbox object, so the number of distinct receiving surfaces you can operate is bounded by your domain count, which is 1 on Free, 10 on Pro and 1,000 on Scale.
Body retention is 30 days across Free, Pro and Scale. For an agent that resolves a support thread inside a week, 30 days is enough. For an agent whose value comes from remembering a conversation from March, it is a cliff you will hit without noticing until someone asks a question the agent cannot answer.
Pick Resend when sending is the job and inbound is a small number of well-known addresses.
Mailtrap
Mailtrap is the one vendor in the set that answers all three questions affirmatively, and it is underrated in this category largely because its testing sandbox is what most developers know it for. POST /api/inbound/folders/{folder_id}/inboxes takes a name and returns id, name and a generated address. The inbound message object carries thread_id, rfc_message_id, in_reply_to and references, and the Threads endpoints return the full conversation. Twilio
